The short version: PeakRunner is a free playtest, provided as is. It has no accounts, no ads and no tracking.
Terms of use
PeakRunner is free software. Its code is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3, and its art and maps under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0: you may use, study, change and share them on those licenses' terms. The PeakRunner name and logo are not licensed; a modified version must use its own name and logo and must not suggest that it is official. Maps and mods you make for PeakRunner are yours to license as you choose.
Play fair and be decent in chat. Chat is checked and rate-limited, and anyone who abuses a server, the directory or this site may be blocked.
No warranty
PeakRunner is a playtest. It is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. You use it at your own risk. The authors are not liable for any damages or losses arising from its use, to the extent the law allows.
Downloads are not code-signed yet, so your operating system may warn you before running them. Check each download's SHA-256 against the one listed on the downloads page. If you host a server, you are responsible for it and for the network it runs on.
Privacy
- No accounts, ads or tracking. This site sets no cookies and loads nothing from other sites, with one exception you choose: the gameplay montage on the home page. Until you press play it is only a picture from this site; pressing play loads the video from YouTube's privacy-enhanced player (youtube-nocookie.com), and YouTube's privacy policy applies to what it then does.
- Playing online: a match server sees your IP address (to send you the game and to limit abuse), the player name you choose, your chat and your play. Your name, chat and play are shown to the other players in that match. Servers keep this in memory while you play; their process logs record joins and departures by a number, not your name or address, and a kick, ban or mute by the name of the player it concerns.
- Moderation log: so admins can act on complaints, the official servers keep a log of who joined (by a number, the name used and the salted one-way hashes described below, never your IP address or player-count code), who left, name changes, all chat (team chat too), frags, round results, a summary of how each player aimed in each round (such as how quickly they fired once their crosshair was on someone), team changes, admins' actions, kick votes, bans, mutes and reports. It is kept on the server for 14 days, then deleted, and only the servers' admins read it. Other servers, games hosted from the game included, keep it only if their host turns it on.
- Reports: any player can report another from the game's Players screen. The server then saves the last minute of play of everyone in the match (positions, movement and the commands each game sent, such as aim and fire) with the two players' names, numbers and hashes and the reason given. Reports are kept for 14 days, then deleted, and only the servers' admins read them.
- Kicks, bans and mutes: server admins can remove, ban or mute a player, and players can vote someone off for 30 minutes. A ban or mute keeps the name the player used, the reason, who decided it and when it ends, with a salted one-way hash of the player's IP address (for IPv6, its /64 network) and of their game's player-count code, never the address or code itself. It is kept until it ends or an admin lifts it; the official servers share their bans with each other.
- Player counts: the game makes a random number the first time it joins a server and keeps it in its settings file. When it joins, it sends a code made from that number and the server's address, so servers at different addresses can't tell they're seeing the same player. The official servers keep only a salted one-way hash of the code, by day and in total, to show on this site how many people have played; nothing ties it to your name, your IP address or your play, and only the two counts are published. Delete the game's settings file and you count as someone new.
- Server list: when you browse servers, the game and this site ask our directory for the list. Community servers that announce themselves are listed with their public address.
- Downloads and updates: downloading from this site, or the launcher checking for updates, sends ordinary web requests. This site does not keep access logs.
- Cloudflare carries this site and the directory, and processes those requests under its own privacy policy. Gameplay goes directly to the match server.
- Your computer: the game and launcher keep your settings on your own computer. They never store match passwords.
- Servers run by other people follow their own practices.
